Weekend preview: Friday night derby double

Tuesday 5th March 2024

This weekend starts early for Royal Wootton Bassett Town with the Men's First and Development sides in derby action on Friday night.

It's another clash between Hellenic League Premier Division playoff contenders at the Sustain Stadium as Sam Collier and his side aim to bounce back from two consecutive defeats against fourth place Fairford Town (7.45pm kick off).

A dominant four goal first half display set Bassett on their way to a 4-2 win when they visited the Reds in September. But recent losses to Highworth Town and Lydney Town aside, Fairford have been one of the division's form sides over the past couple of months. And like Bassett, they are tantalisingly close to booking a playoff place though still in need of points.

A derby clash pitting third against fourth and which is a must win for both teams, it has all the ingredients to be a Friday thriller.

Admission is £7 for adults, £4 for concessions and free for RWBTFC youth members.

The club will be raising money for Prospect Hospice at the fixture with donation buckets around the ground. Please do give generously if you can - all donations are greatly appreciated!

Please note that dogs (except for guide dogs) are not permitted on the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground site.

The Development team, meanwhile, will be aiming to reverse their recent run of indifferent form when they visit Malmesbury Victoria Development in the Wiltshire League Premier Division (7.30pm kick off).

Mark Simpkins' team can complete a season double over their opponents too after a 4-1 home triumph in October.

On Sunday, the Women's First Team return to league action with a trip to Weymouth (2pm kick off).

Bassett are already confirmed as South West Regional Women's Football League Division One Eastern runners-up, but they'll be looking for victory still after being held to a 1-1 draw by the Terras in the teams' meeting in Wiltshire.

A win would mean Bassett would finish the season having recorded a league victory against all opponents in their division except Bath City.

There's action before the weekend starts on Thursday too as the Under 18s visit Radstock in their penultimate Wiltshire League Floodlit Division fixture of the season (7.45pm kick off).

Bassett can complete a season sweep over their rivals after an impressive 3-1 home win in January.
