Bassett suffer late set piece trauma

Four goals were shared in a hectic final ten minutes of Royal Wootton Bassett Town's trip to Longlevens, but that still was not enough for the visitors to claim a point as they fell to a 3-2 defeat.

Defending set pieces continues to be Royal Wootton Bassett Town's downfall, as a pair of late goals conceded from free kicks condemned Paul Braithwaite's team to a dramatic 3-2 loss away at Longlevens.

After falling behind following a Craig Beaton 25-yarder ten minutes before the break, Bassett had toiled for a long time before they were able to equalise with a Steve Yeardley penalty as the game entered its closing stages.

However, almost immediately after restoring parity, they found themselves in arrears again in all too familiar circumstances. A free kick from the halfway line was hurled into the box, which Bassett were unable to clear. The ball then fell to Adam Hughes, who, lurking on the edge of the area, rammed a low drive beyond the despairing dive of Curtis Meare.

Shaun O'Connor then quickly made it 3-1 to Longlevens, as he smashed in a dipping free kick from thirty yards.

In injury time, Harvey Scholes cut the deficit to a single goal as he steered in from the edge of the area after Longlevens themselves found difficulty in dealing with Dan Comer's set piece delivery from the left wing.

Scholes' intervention was too little, too late though, his side's frustrating inability to successfully defend such situations at the other end having already proved costly.
