Milhench magic sparks cup cruise

Petersfield Park, 12th April 2014

A stunning Jason Milhench opener set Wootton Bassett Town on their way to a comfortable 3-0 Bluefin Sports Supplementary Cup victory against Cheltenham Saracens and book a first semi final appearance for the club since 2008/09.

Revisitng the scene of a disapponting league defeat on Monday night, Bassett were determined to right that wrong as well as keep their hopes of silverware alive.

And that they did, controlling the contest from start to finish as the extra pace provided by Milhench, Levi Cox and Ryan Stanners making a big difference.

The visitors took the lead in stunning fashion on 22 minutes. Controlling a beautiful pass from deep with a sublime first touch, Milhench then buried the ball into the bottom of the net with a slick finish.

Eight minutes later the lead was doubled. A blatant handball in the box saw Bassett awarded a penalty, which Kyle Rigley buried.

Chances kept on coming with man of the match Jordan Roberts, who bossed the game from the centre of midfield, seeing a firm left foot strike parried away

Following the restart Tyler Sheppard headed narrowly wide, while Milhench drove a left footed effort just past the post.

With twenty minutes remaining, progression to the last four became a certainty as Roberts was bundled over in the box and Rigley put away another spot kick.

Bassett now join Brimscombe and Thrupp, Maidenhead United Reserves and either Bracknell Town or Oxford City Nomads in the semi finals.

While it's been five years since the club reached this stage of any knockout competition, it's been thirteen since a cup was last lifted. One more win and Bassett will be within touching distance of ending that barren run.
