Having earned seven points from a possible twelve in their last four games, Wootton Bassett Town had made great strides towards securing their survival in the Hellenic League Premier Division. Their loss by the odd goal in three to an extremely fortunate Witney United - one of three sides separating Bassett from the danger zone - however means there is still plenty of work to do as the season winds down.

As one of just three games taking place in the division due to the weather, the contest away against the Blanketmen, whose own form has picked up in recent weeks following the appointment of new manager Richard Hill, represented a fantastic chance to take advantage of one of Dave Turner's side's many games in hand.

And they made the perfect start when midfielder Matty Bown put the visitors in front inside the opening five minutes.

Bassett maintained their lead for the remainder of the half, but were undone in the second period thanks to two Joe Tustain goals. The former Slimbridge frontman netted from the spot on 52 minutes, and afterwards the game appeared headed for a draw. However, the visitors were helped significantly when 'keeper Stewart Thompson was forced off through injury, meaning forward Sam Collier was forced to don the gloves with the score evenly poised. And Bassett's top scorer conceded the winner with just minutes left from a shot that Thompson would likely have kept out.

The two sides now sit tied on the same number of points, although Bassett still hold three games in hand. Making the day even more frustrating was Carterton's win over Fairford, which cuts the gap between them and Bassett from eleven to eight points with the two sides still to face one another at Kilkenny Lane.

Just one of the team's next six matches takes place at Rylands Way though, and with just four points earned away from home since the end of September, it's imperative that form on the road picks up to prevent a nervous final few weeks of the season.
